How to reupholster attached couch cushions:

It's been a very long time since I've posted any projects, but here we go.
We have a leather couch that was peeling and becoming very messy and ugly.
We didn't have the extra money to purchase another one and so I reupholster it.

To be honest, I was scared to death to start the project cause
I really didn't know what I was getting myself into. I recovered the bottom cushions a few years back, and because the back attached covers were still in good shape I left them alone.

I stared at the couch for days trying to figure out what to do. Then I figured, what do I have to lose - I started cutting and then got a better idea on how I would create a new cover.  I used about a yard of fabric per attached cushion and kept the existing zipper from the old cover.

I'd love to hear all about your projects too.

Click on the link below to see the video on how I recovered the cushions, hope it helps.

  1. I have the same leather couch. Wow! I bought it from Ashley Furniture and I was searching for something I could use as a cover and I couldn't believe my eyes about 10 minutes ago when I was scrolling down and seen you're post. Thank you so much! I wish there was a way I could warn people about this furniture because I paid 3,400 and some for all 7 pieces and I also got the extended warranty for 5 years and I filed a claim and they say its normal ware and tare it's still under warranty for another year I believe anyway I was feeling so bad because I paid so much money and it looks like it has a sunburn. I was actually feeling hopeless about fixing this problem thanks again! Have a good night.

    1. I've had my huge, very expensive sectional from Ashley for a little over 3 years, and it is in shambles. Just falling apart.

  2. This is similar to what I'm about to do... we've a beautiful red sectional that started peeling after 3 years. We are on year 4, and it's AWFUL! It's huge, and up against a wall, and will not really be moved, so hoping to just recover the front. I can't sew at all, so going ot attempt this in a month or so with a staplegun. I found you googling, because we too, have attatched cushions, and that makes me nervous. Hopinf I can do this!

  3. OMG...Thank you for this post! I too have an over-sized sectional I bought from Ashley's..6 yr and leather is peeling, red leather and I love the couch, but peeled on two cushions and the rest is starting to peel as well...Calculating, it should cost me less than $100.00 to recover...I love to sew, so looks like I have a great project to do!! I can't wait to search for my fabric!!

  4. I have a imitation leather triple reclining sofa and a double reclining, rocking loveseat -- I have a sewing machine and know just enough about it to be dangerous, but haven't used it in years. I think I can cut the back cushions off like you did, but I'm not sure how to handle the seats and foot rest (all one piece). I'd rather do the recovering (I think!) instead of a slip cover -- thanks for posting your work!

  5. This also happened to me. What are you using to cover your couch? And where did you get it?

  6. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. I believe I used about a yard for the cushions as well and about 2 for the large cushion. I tried to attach the cushions to the back but my thread was too weak and it’s kinda on an awkward angle, so I decided to leave alone. One idea you can do it use heavy duty Velcro and keep the cushions in place. Thanks again!
